Logo Design - things to consider

Logo design is an art form in itself and can have a significant impact on the way that your company is perceived. Ranging from simple text to complicated graphics a great logo design is memorable and can help enforce the message you are trying to communicate to your target customer. When you look at the best logo designs for the top brand names they general follow these key criteria.

Keep your logo design simple

This stands for most design work as there can be a tendency, especially for beginners, to overdo the job in an attempt to create something that is different and radical. The best logos are clean and easily recognisable. Too much detail and the viewer becomes distracted and the message can become confused.

Minimise the colours in your logo design

The best logos are usually restricted to 2-3 colours maximum. As with the previous point too much colour is a distraction and can easily look garish and overdone. The other bonus of using less colour in your logo design is that your letterheads and business cards cost less to print!

Use easy to read fonts

A big mistake that a lot of beginners fall into is using elaborate fonts that look great but are difficult to read. This goes against the main principle of logo design – keep it simple. The font should be clear and easy to read. Lets make it easy for the customer to remember your company name!

Size and shape

Not too long or too short. A well designed logo should be in proportion as it will need to be used in a multitude of places from business cards to bill boards.

Original

Your logo design should be original and as far as possibly unique to your company. It should be different enough for you to be able to trademark but most importantly it should clearly differentiate you from your competition.

Enhance your image

A good logo design should enhance the image of your company and make a statement about who you are and what you do. This can be achieved by using the right colours and the right images to project the image that you want your customers to see. Are you modern, traditional, technical, environmentally aware, friendly and approachable? Use images and colours in your logo design that help promote what you feel are your companies most important attributes.
