04/06/2005 - It looks like the government have gone and got themselves in a bit of hot water over its logo design for the EU presidency. This teaches us all an important lesson – make sure you check what the competitions logo looks like before having your own designed!
It appears that the government have managed to create a logo that looks very similar to one designed for a eurosceptic pressure group! Both logos have swans flying in formation and look remarkably similar. Of course the Bruges Group is not at all happy and has sent a letter to Jack Straw asking him to explain the similarities or face legal action.
The government now has until July 8th to come up with a good reason or else the Burges Group will apply to have the use of the logo prevented.
Of course the Burges Group is making the most of this oversight to stick the knife in over Europe.
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Obviously, the Government has realised that the Bruges Group has been right all along about the federal ambitions of the EU."
Make sure that your company does not make the same mistake with its new logo design by having a look at your competition. Also try and steer clear of logo creation programmes as the likelihood of duplicating a competitor’s logo is greatly increased.
This will undoubtedly be a costly and embarrassing exercise for the government. At the very least they have lost face and at worst cost themselves a lot in reprinting costs. Let’s hope they haven’t plastered this latest logo design over any tea mugs just yet!
