Logo design - copyright can be an issue

The logo design for one of Austria’s most famous ski races is under threat from relatives of the designer. The logo centres around a small goat native to the region and has been a symbol of the race for since the 1930’s.

The logo is plastered over everything to do with the race including stationery and souvenirs. The grandchildren of the original designer now want to be paid for the continued use of the logo as there is no record of their grandfather ever being paid. Now they want 70,000 euros to allow the continued use of the design! An important lesson for any company or event that hasn’t kept records or asked for sole rights to logo design work.

Copyright laws are different from country to country and it is important to establish if any of these issues affect your company. You may be surprised to hear that a photographer owns copyright to any pictures they take even if you pay them to take them!
